Post 4 - Cornell Farms

As I conclude my work at Cornell Farm, it's clear I've benefited from my time spent there. I've learned a lot about gardening, particularly edible plants which was where I spent most of my time. I also became an expert on soil, giving guests recommendations for their various projects. In addition to the raw information I accumulated working at Cornell, it was also a valuable opportunity to understand the workload of a 9-5 full-time job, and appreciate the impossibility of surviving on the current minimum wage. Cornell also served as an environment for me to meet new people. I've kept in contact with several coworkers which valuable.

My progress towards my initial goals has been steady. I've maintained my effort to learn plant names and keep improving in that regard. I've improved my customer service skills, making myself helpful and available to guests while they're around. This has been a particularly large area of growth, as I'm given assignments that have to do with customer interactions. I've also kept thinking about the monetary aspect of my work like I'd said earlier.

I would definitely recommend this senior project to another student. It's a great way to improve your interpersonal skills, learn a lot about plants, and have an intense manual labor 9-5 experience.

Maureen - I think the majority of Cornell employees consider their jobs relatively temporary, though there are several who've been working there for years and don't intend to stop. I'm not sure to what degree my coworkers are using Cornell as a jumping-off point to find higher-paying employment. I would guess most of them consider the job as money in the short term, in addition to bolstering their resume.

  1. Alec, good work with all of this. You've shown balance and curiosity throughout, a willingness to work hard, and an appreciation for the lives of other people, your fellow workers and the customers at Cornell, all of whom are living their lives in the best ways they know how. I've enjoyed watching you master the work you've been given. And these are two lovely photos!
